Electric Eel Model CT

Electric Eel Model CT

The Electric Eel Model CT Drain Cleaning Machine is built for sinks, showers, floor drains, and small sewer lines. Its compact frame, heavy-duty drum system, and cable-driven cleaning mechanism make it suitable for light-to-medium-duty drain cleaning applications. The unit is manufactured by Electric Eel Manufacturing Co. in Springfield, Ohio, a long-standing brand in pipeline maintenance equipment.

The machine is designed to operate with a variety of cable sizes and provides the operator with precision, control, and safety through a foot pedal activation system and optional autofeed mechanism.

  • Optional autofeed attachment

  • Guide hose for autofeed operation

Operator Safety Instructions

Drain cleaning machines involve rotating cables, electrical power, and potentially hazardous blockage materials. For this reason, safety procedures must always be followed.

General Safety Guidelines

  • Wear approved eye protection and leather gloves.

  • Remove loose clothing, ties, rings, or jewellery before operating the machine.

  • Never operate the unit in standing water to avoid electrical shock.

  • Keep all body parts away from the rotating cable.

  • Maintain a firm grip on the cable at all times.

  • Only one person should operate the machine at any given time.

  • Always have GFCI protection in use (built in to the unit).

Cable Safety

  • Replace worn or kinked cables immediately.

  • Never force a cable—allow it to progress naturally.

  • If the cable binds, twists, or stops rotating, release the foot pedal immediately.

DANGER Notice (Manufacturer Warning)

Improper use can result in electrical shock, cable whipping, or severe bodily injury.
This includes:

  • Keeping hands too close to the rotating cable

  • Wearing loose clothing

  • Operating without proper safety equipment

  • Using damaged accessories or cable segments

Operators must review all safety warnings before using the machine.

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI)

The Model CT includes an integrated Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) to protect the operator from electrical shock during operation.

How to Use the GFCI
  1. Press RESET before starting the machine.

  2. Press TEST to confirm the system responds correctly.

  3. If TEST does not shut off power, discontinue use.

  4. Always keep the GFCI dry and unobstructed.

A properly functioning GFCI is essential when working in damp, wet, or humid environments.

Assembly Instructions

Installing the Cable Into the Drum

Follow these steps before operating the drain cleaning machine:

  1. Use a pair of pliers to widen the open hook at the rear end of the cable.

  2. Insert the cable through the front guide tube until it reaches the drum.

  3. Turn the drum by hand until the hook catches the internal drum bracket.

  4. Close the hook securely using pliers.

  5. Feed the first foot of cable through the drum’s front opening.

The cable must be securely connected before operating the machine to prevent cable dislodgement.

Operating Instructions

The Model CT is engineered for a range of drain diameters. Proper cable selection is essential for safe and efficient cleaning.

Recommended Drain & Cable Sizes

Drain Diameter Recommended Cable
¾″ – 1¼″ ¼″ or ⁵⁄₁₆″ cable
1½″ – 3″ ⅜″ cable
3″ – 4″ ½″ cable

Do not attempt to use cables larger than recommended—they may bind or damage the drain line.

Using the Drain Cleaner Chuck

The Model CT features a keyless chuck that opens and closes by twisting:

  • Twist counterclockwise to open.

  • Insert cable.

  • Twist clockwise to secure.

Ensure the chuck is fully tightened before operating.

Cleaning Drain Lines Without Autofeed

  1. Turn the POWER switch to FORWARD.

  2. Depress the foot pedal to begin drum rotation.

  3. Feed the cable manually into the drain.

  4. Maintain a steady grip to avoid kinking.

  5. When the obstruction is reached, guide the cable gently until cleared.

  6. To retract, release the foot pedal and place the switch in REVERSE.

  7. Clean, coil, and inspect the cable after removal.

Manual feeding gives the operator greater sensitivity when navigating tight bends or soft blockages.

Cleaning Drain Lines Using Autofeed (With Guide Hose)

When using the optional autofeed mechanism:

  1. Insert the cable into the guide hose and into the drain.

  2. Place the POWER switch in FORWARD.

  3. Use the foot pedal to engage rotation.

  4. Move the autofeed lever forward to advance the cable.

  5. Pull the lever back to retract cable.

  6. Add lubrication if the cable drags or sticks.

  7. Adjust tension using the autofeed knob as needed.

  8. If the cable binds, immediately release the foot pedal.

The autofeed system increases speed and reduces operator fatigue but requires careful tension adjustment.

Storage Instructions

To prolong the lifespan of the cable and drum assembly:

  • Rinse the cable with fresh water after each use.

  • Oil the cable lightly before storing.

  • Remove the cable from the drum if storing for extended periods.

  • Allow the drum and cable to air-dry thoroughly.

  • Use a clean, dry rag to wipe away debris.

Proper care prevents cable corrosion, drum rust, and performance issues.

Maintenance Guidelines

Preventative maintenance ensures consistent performance and reduces the risk of cable breakage or machine damage.

Routine Maintenance

  • Clean unit periodically with mild detergent.

  • Avoid harsh solvents or chemical cleaners.

  • Inspect cables for kinks, cracks, or thinning.

  • Replace damaged cables immediately.

  • Keep ventilation openings clear of debris.

  • Store the machine in a dry, clean environment.

Compressed Air Cleaning

When using compressed air:

  • Always wear safety glasses.

  • Maintain safe distance from loose debris.
